According to Dr. Oz, adherents of the paleo diet, and the whole-milk-guzzling folks over at the Weston A. Price Foundation, bone broth—the superfood du jour made from simmering bones and water for hours on the stove—has a host of mystical powers: It can detoxify your liver, lubricate your stiff joints, patch up the holes in your gut, and erase your wrinkles, to name just a few of its supposed party tricks. Kobe Bryant claims that bone broth cured his ruptured Achilles tendon.

So is bone broth really all its proponents claim? We put the question to scientists.
