Days like lost dogs

Hey Guys—

There was an interesting snippet of dialogue in the first season

of True Detective from Rustin Cohle, used to describe the seemingly
endless, monotonous days that go into solving a case, days where
it seems like nothing gets done and you’re no closer to your goal:
“days like lost dogs.”

It’s an interesting saying, one that provokes a visual image in

your mind, along with the perfect feeling for such days, and it’s
a saying that transcends the words.

Any successful endeavor is full of these “days like lost dogs,”

and often what makes the difference between those who fail and
those who succeed are those who can endure weeks, months, and
years of these, while continuing to focus on their goal.  In
this day and age of instant gratification, fewer and fewer
people can handle them.

This especially applies to relationships.  Both men and women,

desperate to be “in a relationship,” have no tolerance for these
days, instead seeking quick relief to being single.  So, they meet
up with those just like them, quickly declare relationship, then
just as quickly get out of it when they find it doesn’t match up
to their ideal.

They have an idea in their head of “what it should be,” and no one

is talking them out of it.  They ARE going to find LOVE no matter
what, and they will KNOW it when they feel it.  Of course they
feel the transient high of attraction over and over, declare it
LOVE, declare relationship, the feeling fades, they break up with
the person who “fooled them” and then repeat it.

Because they have this ideal in their mind, they constantly compare

it to reality (which can never match up), and when there is a
schism between reality and ideal, they quickly move on, chasing an
ideal which can never exist.

However, when a man is able to deal with the “lost dog days,” he

simply works the process, making decisions on whether he enjoys
the reality of something or not, with no ideal in his mind.  What
happens is, he spends a lot of days with a lot of women he doesn’t
like, knowing at some point he will find one he will, but never
trying to turn something into what it is not.

Furthermore, he is not desperate for instant gratification, knowing

it actually pushes him farther away from his desired outcome,
wasting both time and emotional energy.

Anyone can endure a day or a week of lost dog days, but it’s harder

when there are months or even years of them.  Yet that type of
endurance is necessary for something lasting. It’s been estimated
that it took 12 years for every “overnight success,” and that’s a
lot of lost dog days.  Not easy to handle, which is why so few
people get what they want.
