CHICAGO - A cracked sewer vent caused an odor to fill a portion of Maplewood Middle School. Repairs were scheduled to be made over Christmas break, and the problem will also be examined over the weekend. (WMFJ)

MARYLAND - Howard and Montgomery County Public Schools were awarded the Schools Environmental Health Champion Award. The EPA gave this award at a green cleaning conference which recognizes exemplary schools and works to bring others on board.

COLORADO - A school in Aurora has developed an app to track student illness. Parents can see symptoms displayed in school and know if their child is at risk or not. (9News) 

NATIONALLY - The U.S EPA has completed a 10-part Indoor Air Quality Master Webinar Series  to help schools manage IAQ and create a safe and healthy environment for children in school. Some webinar titles include Pollution Solution: How to Create IAQ Policies, Plans and Practices to Control Pollutant Sources in Your School District; Making the Case for Environmental Health, Academic Performance and High-Performing Facilities; and Mold and Moisture: Double Trouble for Schools.

Research has shown that ADHD medications can cause sleep problems in children. Certain medications cause children to take longer to fall asleep and sleep for shorter amounts of time. It is unclear if varying the dosage of medication will help. (Science World Report)

A common pesticide used in agriculture seems to be linked to decreased lung function in children. The effects observed are almost as harmful as the effects of secondhand smoking. (Time)

Too much screen time has been revealed as one of the main concerns for parents about their children's health.Excessive screen time can cause a sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise, which can lead to obesity. (Food World News)



Clarkson University has designed a new technology to measure BPA in the air. BPA is found in plastic and can lead to behavioral, reproductive, developmental, and neurological issues. (

A month long gas leak has been sickening residents in the San Fernando Valley that originated from a gas company storage facility. Crews have been unsuccessful at stopping the flow and the newest attempt could take one to three months. (Los Angeles Times)

CALIFORNIA - Officials have considered declaring a state of emergency around the site of a hazardous oil leak. Inspectors say crude oil may have leaked into an underground drinking water source, and further investigations need to be made. (NBC Bay Area)

A recent study showed that many baby products containing polyurethane foam can increase the levels of the TDCIPP metabolite in small children. The TDCIPP metabolite can cause hormone disruptions and is classifies as a carcinogen. (Environmental Working Group)
