Mothers of the Bible Devotional: Eve

Mothers of the Bible: Eve
Written by: Inga Harrison
"Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.  She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man." 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.  Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil." (Genesis 4:1-2)
Eve was the first mother, and like all first time mothers she made some mistakes.  Being the first mother, she did not have another mother that she could turn to for advice.  As a result, not only did she introduce us all to sin, she also endured many obstacles as a first time mother.  In her day, she was not faced with violence on TV or in the lyrics of music.  Yet, she became the first mom to lose a child to violence at the hands of another child.  She had to deal with the consequences of sin and bury her youngest son.  Are you that woman that has struggled as a first time mom with no guidance? Have you lost a child? God chose Eve to be the first example of a mother that we see in the Bible.  Eve shows us that as mothers, we do not have to be perfect.  Even in the best of circumstances, bad things may happen to us and to our children.  When we are faced with difficult family issues, we must remember that God is able to handle our family problems.  There is no family problem that is too big for God.  Like Eve, many times as mothers we may feel responsible for the bad choices and acts of our children, but we must remember that they belong to God.  God is able to redeem them and draw them closer to Him.  Today, if you are worried and distressed about the choices your children have made or are making, the best thing you can do for them is to pray for them.  A perfect mother does not exist, but a perfect God does exist.
Dear Lord,
We come today thanking you for Eve and her imperfections, yet powerful example of motherhood. I come today praying for the single mom who feels like she is not perfect. Lord help her to realize that through you all things are possible and that her destiny as a mother is not defined by the presence of a man. We come praying for that first time mother that is struggling with the adjustment of her new responsibility. May she always lean on you and know that you are always with her.  We pray that every mother reading this will remember that the best gift that she can offer to her children is a prayer.  We come praying for those women who desire to become mothers.  Lord, may they know that you determine who will be a mother and that your will is best. Father, thank you for loving us and helping us to stay obedient to your will in whatever season of motherhood we are facing. In Jesus' name, Amen.
