Man Utd's Living Wage problem

Citizens UK NEWS

Dear Blue,

The world’s wealthiest football club, Manchester United, is refusing to pay its caterers, cleaners and stewards a wage they can live on. [1] Six months ago community leaders in Manchester handed the club a letter signed by over 2,000 of us asking them to meet with Greater Manchester Citizens to discuss the benefits of becoming a living wage employer [2] So far, they’ve ignored our calls.

But this Friday is their first match at the start of the new football season. The last thing they want is to come under pressure on their big day. A team of community leaders will be outside the Old Trafford Stadium with a giant calendar invite urging Ed Woodward, the club’s Executive Vice Chairman, to finally meet us and discuss the fact that they don’t pay their staff a real Living Wage.

Ed Woodward has the power to change the club’s pay policy at the stroke of a pen. If we all add our voices and email Mr Woodward we can show him that he can no longer afford to brush our concerns under the carpet.

So, Blue, will you write to Manchester United about the real Living Wage now? Click below to see our ready-made template email for you to use – it’ll only take 30 seconds to send!

Yes, I'll email Ed Woodward →

There’s real momentum on our side: Everton, Chelsea and West Ham have all become Living Wage employers – they know the difference it makes to their staff’s lives. Other clubs like Fulham and Liverpool are preparing to do the same soon [3]. It’s so important that we take action now.

We know that Manchester United FC can easily afford this. Their revenues have been growing year on year. Giving low paid workers a wage their can live on, so they can to keep their heads above water would only cost them a tiny fraction, as little as 0.1%, of what Man Utd earn on match days.

If you’re a Manchester United fan, the club is even more likely to listen to you. So please write to Ed Woodward today and feel free to edit our suggested template email to let him know why this matters to you personally.

Blue,  please write to Ed Woodward, Manchester United’s Executive Vice Chairman now.

Email Ed Woodward →

Thanks for your support,
