What is "Homelessness"?

What is "Homelessness"?
National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
November 16th-November 22nd

As we turn our focus nationally to hunger and homelessness, Back on My Feet NYC has been focusing on this complex issue since our founding in 2012.  And we still ask...what is homelessness?

This is what we know... we know we have served 367 "homeless" individuals on their journey towards self-sufficiency.  We have met veterans, individuals in recovery, individuals transitioning out of incarceration, individuals who have escaped domestic violence relationships.  We have met individuals who have had serious debates about whether candy corn or Reeses Pieces are the better Halloween candy (don't get us started).  We have met individuals who say the one person who changed their life was their mother, their father, their children, or their teammate standing next to them who convinced them to join our program.  We have met individuals who say if they could listen to one record every day for the rest of their life it would be Michael Jackson's Thriller or anything by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

We have met athletes, runners, and marathoners, and finishers.

We have met 367 individuals who wanted to make a change.

And we have used one common thread to make that change in 367 incredibly diverse individuals... running.  We use running to lay the groundwork for motivation, dedication, and self-improvement so that these unique individuals can find employment and independent living.  And with those 367 individuals, we have helped 154 of them find employment, 114 individuals find independent housing, and 145 individuals complete education or training courses.  Together, they have all helped us run over 44,000 miles.

So what do these "individuals experiencing homelessness" have in common?  They have the fact that they want to make a change in common.  They are similar in the fact that they are currently living in residential facilities.  They are alike in the fact that they come together every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to run to change the trajectory of their lives.

Our Members and our equally diverse community of 118 volunteers have all banded together around the concept of running to make a real difference in our community.

Upon completing the first mile with our program our Members receive a Back on My Feet wristband to symbolize that if they can run one miles, they can run 10, and then they can run 50 miles and they can do this because they have a community of supporters around them to help in their unique journey towards self-sufficiency.

So we are asking you to band together with our members and continue the symbolism of that first mile wristband by supporting our diverse community of individuals experiencing homelessness in New York City.
