Member Highlight: Meet Andres!

Instead of having support, I used to only have people who doubt me.”

Andres grew up in what he calls a “broken home.” By the time he was 16, he was home alone, feeding himself without any kind of support system. Before he knew it, his life had continued with a directionless feeling and he was hit with the realization that he needed to make a change. “I had a goal of success, but there was no clarity.” Andres decided it was time to take the next step and recreate himself as he began his time at The Bowery Mission.

Andres heard about BoMF quickly after moving in and was eager to join. It became a motivating challenge for him to reach Phase II of the program at The Bowery so he could circle up with the team. When he reached this first clear goal, he jumped right in. Andres took full advantage of Back on My Feet, being a part of a community, and being a part of a support system that he'd strived for, for so long.

With 98% attendance, Andres took commitment seriously and was quickly voted team captain. “I love the community building lessons I’m learning through BoMF. I am learning how to work with all kinds of people & how to bring this into my future as I will always be working with people.”

Andres is a huge part of that community building. He aims to reflect positivity in everything he does, and if you see him at a morning run, it becomes clear that this comes naturally. At Team Bowery’s last social, he took it all in, “to step back and see everyone interact and smile was amazing… I didn’t want the night to end.

Andres’ commitment has flowed into his employment goals as well. He's already taking big steps bringing some of those people skills into his day to day working as a concierge and maintenance tech. He is looking forward to growing in his company with a goal of eventually becoming a residential manager.

Andres has gained a sense of empowerment from running. His perspective on life is renewed, readying him to take on all his goals. He is very thankful to BoMF for this new sense of focus. When asked what Back on My Feet means to him there is no hesitation in his answer… “FAMILY!
